Report:
The Eagles squad was bolstered by the inclusion of experienced campaigners, Lee Tinnion and Mark Bowe. The positive influence was apparent from the start as they instilled belief into an Eagles team that had taken some battering’s in recent weeks.

On 7 minutes, Tinnion opened the scoring after Bowe declining an easy penalty shot, quickly tapped and moved the ball wide. Tinnion squeezed in at the corner for the first of his three scores.

In the early stages of the game, Workington were competitive and manufactured some good field position. They were not helped by a succession of injuries that forced them to use the subs bench early in the game. On 18 minutes they were unlucky not to reduce the arrears when a long range penalty bounced back off the post. This let off spurred Aspatria into action and on 21 minutes, Lee Holliday at scrum half peeled from the back of a ruck and ran 30 meters through despairing tackles to score an unconverted try.

Tinnion’s second came on 34 minutes, this time he ran from distance to outflank a tiring Zebra’s defence to score in the corner. To their credit, Workington fought back and as the half drew to a close they had several easy penalty kicks to get on the score board. On each occasion they took quick taps and came near to scoring but ultimately could not break through. Walter Cloete and his fellow back rower’s tackled hard to keep the visitors at bay. At half time the Aspatria lead was 15:0.

In the second half, Aspatria had the advantage of a stiff breeze. It took only 8 minutes for them to extend their lead through impressive outside centre, Nick Edgar. Again the score was unconverted by Holliday. A few minutes late the forwards got in on the act. Cloete was rewarded for his all out tackling stint when the home pack mauled the ball to the Workington line and he was the man who came up smiling. Kicking duties passed from Holliday to Edgar and he was successful with the conversion giving the Eagles a 27:0 lead.

Tinnion’s third try was made by Holliday. Now playing at fly half, Holliday on the half way line spotted a gap in the Workington line and broke through. Tinnion, the ultimate poacher, was on his shoulder to take the ball on the 22 line and cross under the sticks. Edgar converted.

The Zebra’s continued to play with spirit but were tiring badly as the match moved into its final stage. On 31 minutes, Holliday executed a perfect cross field kick which was caught by winger, Keiron Ritchie. Ritchie was unmarked and had a short run to the line.

Aspatria’s final score came on the final whistle when Edgar, with searing pace, broke through from distance and squeezed in near the corner. Final result 44:0, a result that will improve moral at Bower Park following recent tough times.
